Folklore #101 Folklore & calendar

Indian astrologers routinely turn the whole chart around and count the houses from the Moon rather than from the horizon.

It is called the Chandra lagna, the Moon ascendant, and it is used alongside the ordinary chart rather than instead of it. The stated reason is practical: birth times are often wrong by minutes and the horizon moves a degree every four minutes, while the Moon moves half a degree an hour. Reading from the Moon is the reading that survives a bad birth certificate.
