Terms
Terms of use
Plain terms for a free reference site. Please read the “not for navigation” part.
Who provides this site
Cool Moon Facts is operated by Whiptronics LLC, a Utah limited liability company. Using the site means these terms apply to that use. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the site.
What this site is
It is a free, informational reference about the Moon: computed phases, rise and set times, a calendar, eclipses, meteor showers, and a separate body of historical and folkloric material. It is offered for interest and education. It is not professional, navigational, safety or scientific advice.
Science, history, tradition and astrology are kept apart
The site deliberately separates what is measured from what people have believed. It reads the Moon three ways, each labelled: science and history, historical beliefs, and astrology and myths. The traditions are presented as what people have said about the Moon, and the astrology as modern symbolic interpretation and reflection — never as prediction, and never as a demonstrated effect on you, your health, your mood, your luck or events on Earth. Nothing on this site should be used to make a decision about your health, your money or your safety.
The numbers are computed, and they are approximations
Phases, distances, rise and set times, eclipse geometry and shower forecasts are calculated in your browser from published algorithms and published source data. They are good, and they are not authoritative. Rounding, the assumptions listed on the methodology page, atmospheric refraction, your horizon and your local terrain all move the real answer. Where a figure matters — an eclipse you are travelling for, an observation you are timing — check it against the official source, which that page names.
Looking at the sky safely
The Moon is safe to look at with anything. The Sun is not. Never look at the Sun with your eyes, binoculars, a camera or a telescope without a filter certified for solar viewing and fitted in front of the optics — sunglasses, exposed film, smoked glass and welding glass below shade 14 are not safe, and a filter that screws in at the eyepiece end is not safe. During a total solar eclipse the filter comes off only for totality itself, and goes back on before the Sun reappears. If you are unsure, follow NASA’s current eye-safety guidance rather than this paragraph.
What you save
Your location, your saved facts and your settings stay in your browser — see Privacy. We never receive them, so we claim no rights over them and cannot restore them if your browser clears them.
Our content, and everyone else’s
Astronomical facts and dates are facts, and facts are not ours to own. The writing, the design, the code, the rendered moons and the eclipse globes are ours or used with permission. The underlying data is other people’s and is credited on the methodology page — NASA, the International Meteor Organization, GeoNames, Natural Earth and the Bright Star Catalogue among them — under their own licences. Read the site, use what you learn, print a page, link to it. Please do not republish substantial parts of the writing as your own or scrape the collection wholesale.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, tell us. Astronomy is checkable and history is argued about, and both are better for a correction: coolmoonfacts@whiptronicsllc.com. Every card carries the date it was last checked so you can see how fresh the claim is.
Reasonable use
Please do not attack the site or the infrastructure it runs on, try to break or bypass its security, or use it to break the law or to harm someone. Beyond that, use it.
As-is, and the limits of what we owe you
This site is provided free and as-is, without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We work hard on accuracy and we fix what is reported to us, but we do not warrant that every figure, date, historical note or forecast is correct, or that the site will always be available. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Whiptronics LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages arising from your use of this site. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; where that is so this paragraph applies only as far as it lawfully can, and nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Changes, and getting in touch
These terms may change as the site does; the date below moves when they do. Questions, corrections and complaints all go to coolmoonfacts@whiptronicsllc.com. A real person reads it.
