Rituals & practice
Write a wish on a dried bay leaf, burn it, and let the smoke carry it. It is one of the most-copied rituals on the internet and it does have a genuinely old ancestor.
Bay was Apollo's plant and the Delphic priestess is described as chewing or burning laurel before prophesying. The modern version is a wish rather than a prophecy and is usually attached to the new moon, which the ancient one was not. Bay smoke smells extremely good, which may be doing more of the work than the tradition admits.
