Folklore #238
Folklore & calendar
English keeps a small cupboard of moon idioms: many moons ago for a long time, over the moon for delighted, moonstruck for dazed, and mooning for something else entirely.
'Many moons' is a month-count, which is how most languages measured medium-length time before calendars were common. 'Over the moon' comes straight out of the nursery rhyme about the cow, and only became a cliché in the 1970s through football interviews. The Moon is the most idiomatic object in the sky by a distance.
