Folklore #258
The eight phases
In several living traditions the month does not begin when the Moon reaches conjunction. It begins when a qualified person goes outside and says they have seen the crescent.
That makes the start of a month a human judgement about a marginal observation near the horizon in twilight — which is why it can differ by a day between two towns. Astronomers can now predict visibility accurately, and the argument over whether prediction may replace sighting is live in Islamic and Jewish practice alike.
