The Greeks had three moon goddesses running at once: Selene for the disc itself, Artemis for the crescent, Hecate for the dark.

The division is roughly phase-based and later traditions collapsed it into a single triple goddess, maiden, mother, crone, which is now standard in modern pagan practice. NASA's Artemis programme is named for the same goddess, Apollo's twin sister, which is either a nice piece of symmetry or an excellent bit of naming.
