The triple goddess, maiden, mother, crone, matched to waxing, full and waning, is not ancient. A poet assembled it in 1948.

Robert Graves proposed it in The White Goddess and modern pagan practice adopted it more or less wholesale. Individual pieces are genuinely old; the tidy three-part scheme mapped onto the phases is not, and no pre-modern culture is known to have used it that way. Worth knowing. It does not make it any less useful to the people using it.
