Moon in the signs
There is a twenty-eighth nakshatra. It was squeezed out to make the arithmetic come to twenty-seven, and it is still used for choosing auspicious hours.
Abhijit is Vega, and it sits between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana. Twenty-eight mansions of equal size do not divide the zodiac neatly and twenty-seven do, so Abhijit lost its span but kept a job: the Abhijit muhurta, the roughly forty-eight minutes around local noon, is considered a good window for starting almost anything.
Tradition: Vedic astrology; the dropped nakshatra, retained in muhurta practice · checked Sep 2026
