Your birth chart

A birth chart maps where the Sun, the Moon and the planets appeared from the place you were born, at the moment you were born. The time and place matter because the sky turns: the rising sign changes about every two hours, and the Moon moves half a degree an hour. The positions are calculated from astronomical data; what astrologers read into them is a tradition, not established science. Everything is worked out in your browser.

Birth-chart positions are calculated from astronomical data. Their astrological meanings are part of an interpretive tradition and are not scientifically established. Nothing here is advice about health, money, law or relationships.

Birth details

A nickname is enough. Please do not enter a child’s full name.

From 1 January 1900 up to today. Needed for every position in the chart.

How sure is the birth time?

The rising sign, the houses and the Moon’s exact degree depend on the time. With a range, the chart shows what changes within it; with no time, it leaves those out rather than guessing.

The clock time where you were born; daylight saving is worked out from the place and date.

Tropical zodiac, geocentric positions, five major aspects: fixed for every chart on this site.

How the chart is made

Three layers, kept apart. First the astronomy: where the Sun, Moon and planets appeared from Earth at that moment, calculated in your browser and checked against NASA JPL’s ephemeris to within seconds of arc. Then the astrological mapping: signs, houses, angles and aspects, each by a stated rule. Then the interpretation: what modern Western astrologers associate with the result, written for this site and labelled as tradition.

The time zone is the one your birthplace used then. The page converts your local birth time with the time-zone history of the place, including daylight saving, and shows you the offset it used before calculating. A time the clocks skipped is refused; a time that happened twice asks which. Records before about 1970 can be uncertain, so a manual offset is available.

Unknown and approximate times are shown as such. Without a time there is no rising sign, no houses and no angles, and the Moon’s possible range for the day is shown instead. With a range, anything that changes within it is marked beside the result.

The settings are always shown. Tropical zodiac, geocentric positions, your chosen house system (Placidus, Whole Sign or Equal) and node, and the orbs used for aspects. Close to the poles, Placidus cannot be drawn; the page says so and lets you choose another system rather than switching quietly.

Every term has a definition. Each astrology word is a button that opens its entry in the astrology dictionary.
