Fact #125
Geology
Small telescopes pointed at the Moon's night side catch flashes when meteoroids hit — several hundred have been recorded since 2005.
With no atmosphere, nothing burns up; a rock the size of a grapefruit arrives at twenty kilometres a second and its energy goes straight into a flash bright enough to see from Earth. The largest recorded so far, in March 2013, was briefly visible to the naked eye and left a crater about 18 metres across.
