The leading theory is that the Moon is a piece of Earth, blasted loose by a collision with a Mars-sized world.

About 4.5 billion years ago a body nicknamed Theia struck the young Earth. The debris settled into orbit and assembled into the Moon within perhaps a century. The strongest evidence is chemical: lunar rocks share Earth's oxygen isotope signature almost exactly, which is hard to explain if the Moon formed somewhere else.
