Fact #140 Missions

Lunokhod 2 drove about 39 kilometres across the Moon in 1973, a distance nothing on another world beat until a Mars rover passed it in 2014.

It was driven from Earth by a five-person crew watching low-frame-rate television with a two-and-a-half-second round-trip delay, which is roughly like driving by looking at a slideshow. Reanalysis using orbital imagery in 2013 nudged the total up towards 42 kilometres, which quietly made the record slightly harder to beat.
