Fact #170
Earth & tides
The Sun's tidal pull on Earth is about 46% as strong as the Moon's, which is why spring and neap tides differ so much.
Tidal force falls off with the cube of distance rather than the square, so the Sun's colossal mass loses out to the Moon's closeness. When the two line up at new and full moon their bulges add; at the quarters they partly cancel. Take the Moon away and there would still be tides, at less than half the size and on a rigid 24-hour clock.
