Fact #174
Earth & tides
The Moon has been putting the brakes on the Earth for four and a half billion years. Without it, a day would probably run to something like eight hours.
The young Earth turned in about five hours and the Moon has been slowing it ever since; the Sun's tides alone would have done far less. A shorter day means stronger winds and a very different climate, which is one of the reasons the Moon keeps turning up in arguments about whether Earth is unusual.
