Fact #183
Strange but true
The Moon's far side is permanently shielded from Earth's radio noise by 3,500 kilometres of rock, which makes it the best place in the inner solar system to listen to the early universe.
Low-frequency radio astronomy is nearly impossible from Earth: our ionosphere blocks part of the band and our transmitters drown the rest. On the far side both problems disappear. Several small instruments have already been landed there and larger arrays are proposed, including one strung across a crater.
