The Moon is covered in a layer of pulverised rock several metres deep, made almost entirely by things hitting it.

With no atmosphere to burn up incoming debris, four billion years of impacts have ground the top of the crust into fine regolith, around 4-5 m deep on the maria and up to 15 m on the older highlands. Everything Apollo walked on was demolition dust from the entire history of the solar system.
