Artemis II passed the mark on 6 April 2026, looping around the far side on a free-return path with the Moon near the far end of its orbit. The previous holder was Apollo 13, at 400,171 km in 1970, a crew who only went that far because an oxygen tank exploded and the safest way home was around the Moon rather than back the way they came.
