Snow Moon
February is the snowiest month across much of the northern United States and northern Europe — not the coldest, which is usually January, but the one that delivers the most of it. The alternative name in circulation, Hunger Moon, is about the same month from the other end: stores running out with the growing season still two months away.
Where the name comes from
One of the more defensible names in the list, in that it describes something a person in the right latitude would say without being taught it. It also has the least to argue about, which is why it is usually the one example given when somebody wants to show the names are sensible.
