An oxygen tank exploded 200,000 miles out, and the safest way home turned out to be round the far side of the Moon.
Going round rather than turning back is why the crew still hold the record for the greatest distance any human has been from Earth: 400,171 km, held for 54 years until Artemis II beat it in April 2026.
