The first photograph of a black hole

Eight radio telescopes on four continents were combined into one Earth-sized instrument to photograph a shadow 55 million light years away.

The data would not fit down any network, so half a tonne of hard drives were flown to the processing centres, and the South Pole's could not leave until the Antarctic winter ended, delaying everything by six months.
