A ship lost on a lake with no warning
The Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior in a November gale with all twenty-nine hands, and never sent a distress call.
The last message, to a ship ten miles behind, was "we are holding our own". Superior is big enough to make its own weather and deep enough that the wreck was not found for three days; the cause is still argued over, between hatch covers, shoaling and simply the size of the seas.
