A vote decided by a letter from a mother
American women got the vote when a 24-year-old Tennessee legislator changed his mind because his mother wrote and told him to.
Tennessee was the thirty-sixth state, the last one needed. Harry Burn had a red rose in his lapel, the badge of the anti-suffrage side, and a letter in his pocket from Febb Burn saying "be a good boy". The chamber was tied 48-48 when his name came round.
