A raid that did not go as usual
Police raided a bar on Christopher Street at about half past one in the morning, as they often did, and this time the people inside and the crowd outside refused to disperse.
The riots ran for several nights and the first Pride marches were held on the anniversary a year later. Accounts of who did what differ sharply and always have, partly because the people involved had every reason not to give their names to anyone taking notes.
