Cool Sun Facts · Plan an observation
When to go out, for what you want to see
Pick what you want to see. The planner finds the stretches of the night when the sky is dark enough for it, your target is high enough and, where it matters, the Moon is down, and says what limited the plan. It gives windows and reasons, not a score.
The Sun's depth
Downloads NOAA's latest OVATION aurora model (about 900 KB) from services.swpc.noaa.gov. It sends nothing about your place; the value for your place is looked up here. It is a short-term forecast for one moment, so it says nothing about later tonight or another night.
The plan
Choose a place to plan for.
Sends this place's coordinates, rounded to about a kilometre, to the US National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), and shows its forecast sky cover for each window. Outside the United States and its territories, the same rounded coordinates go to this site, which asks MET Norway (the Norwegian Meteorological Institute) for its forecast and keeps nothing.
