Baryogenesis
Say it: bair-ee-oh-JEN-uh-sis IPA: /ˌbæriəˈdʒɛnəsɪs/ noun
Baryogenesis: A proposed process that produced an excess of baryonic matter over antimatter in the early universe.
Baryonic matter includes the protons and neutrons in ordinary atoms. Baryogenesis names the explanation scientists seek for why this matter survived in excess of its antimatter counterparts.
- Example
- The proposed baryogenesis model attempted to explain the matter-antimatter imbalance.
- Why astronomers use it
- It addresses why a universe containing ordinary matter remained after matter and antimatter annihilated.
- Tiny cosmic connection
- The imbalance is the problem to explain; a particular baryogenesis mechanism has not been established as the answer.
