With no Moon in the sky, older calendars simply called this the start of the month, and the symbolism followed the arithmetic. Modern practice keeps the same shape: write down what you're starting, keep it small and specific, and don't tell anyone for a fortnight. It works about as well as any other reason to sit down and decide what you want.
