Folklore #153
Rituals & practice
The central rite of modern Wicca, in which a priestess is understood to embody the goddess. The phrase is far older than the rite.
Greek and Roman writers accuse the witches of Thessaly of literally pulling the Moon out of the sky, and it was a stock joke by Aristophanes' time. Gerald Gardner's mid-twentieth-century revival took the phrase and built a ceremony around it. Ancient name, modern ceremony, and the tradition is generally open about that.
