Folklore #163 Rituals & practice

Card II of the tarot has a crescent moon at her feet, a crescent crown, and a veil she is not going to lift. She is the Moon card's quieter relative.

The Rider-Waite design is Pamela Colman Smith's, 1909, and the lunar symbolism in it is deliberate and dense. Where card XVIII, the Moon, is confusion and things half-seen, the High Priestess is knowledge deliberately withheld. Readers treat the pair as two different problems with the same light source.

Tradition: Rider-Waite-Smith tarot (1909); Golden Dawn correspondences · checked Sep 2026
