Folklore #182 Folklore & calendar

In Sumer the moon god Nanna was the father of the sun god, not the other way round, and the great ziggurat at Ur was his.

A calendar culture puts the calendar's timekeeper at the top, and Mesopotamia counted in months. His Akkadian name was Sin, and the last Babylonian king, Nabonidus, was so devoted to him that he neglected Marduk and lost the city to Cyrus — a coup with a lunar cult at the centre of it.

Tradition: Sumerian and Akkadian; Nanna/Sin, Ur and Harran · checked Sep 2026
