Folklore #186 Folklore & calendar

The Inca moon goddess had her own temple room at Coricancha in Cusco, lined with silver as the Sun's was lined with gold, and her image was tended by women.

She governed the calendar and marriage, and eclipses were read as an animal attacking her — people made as much noise as possible to drive it off. The Inca ran a lunar festival calendar alongside a solar year, which is a harder piece of bookkeeping than either alone.
