Folklore #187 Folklore & calendar

The Aztec moon goddess was dismembered by her brother at the moment of his birth and thrown down a mountain, and a ten-foot carving of her broken body was set at the bottom of the Templo Mayor stairs.

The stone was found by electricity workers in Mexico City in 1978 and it is what led to the excavation of the temple itself. She led four hundred siblings against their mother; Huitzilopochtli was born fully armed and stopped it. Bodies of sacrificial victims went down those same stairs, landing where she lay.
