Folklore #193
Folklore & calendar
A clay tablet from Ugarit carries a complete poem about the moon god Yarikh negotiating a bride price for Nikkal, and it is over three thousand years old.
He offers a thousand pieces of silver and ten thousand of gold, plus lapis lazuli, and her father haggles. It is one of very few surviving texts where a moon deity is the protagonist of an ordinary domestic transaction rather than a cosmic one, and it ends with a blessing for brides.
