Folklore #198 Folklore & calendar

In Tupi-Guarani tradition the Moon is Jaci, protector of plants that open at night and of anyone in love. The word is still in ordinary Brazilian Portuguese as a name.

Jaci is paired with Guaraci, the Sun, and the two run between them most of what the tradition explains. Night-flowering plants really are a category — moonflower, evening primrose, night-blooming cereus — and they are pollinated by moths, so a tradition that files them under the Moon has noticed something correct about them.

Tradition: Tupi-Guarani; recorded in Brazilian folklore · checked Sep 2026
