Folklore #248
Folklore & calendar
Surveys of police officers and nurses regularly find a majority who believe full moons bring more trouble. Studies of the actual figures keep finding nothing.
A meta-analysis of thirty-seven studies found no reliable lunar effect on crime, psychiatric admissions or anything similar, and later work has agreed. The belief persists because it is self-confirming: a busy full moon is memorable and a quiet one is not, and shift workers talk to each other.
