Fact #109
Phases & orbit
The Moon rises about 50 minutes later each night on average, but the real figure runs from about 20 minutes to nearly 80, depending on the season and how far north you are.
The delay depends on the angle the Moon's path makes with the horizon, which changes through the year and steepens towards the equator. At high latitudes in autumn the path lies almost flat, the delay shrinks to twenty-odd minutes, and you get the harvest moon; six months later the same place gets the longest delays of the year.
