Cool Moon Facts by Whip

Real astronomy and dated history, with sources. Documented traditions and folklore. Modern lunar astrology · symbolic, not predictive.

Fact #131 Missions

Alan Shepard hit two golf balls on the Moon in 1971 and said the second went "miles and miles and miles". Image analysis in 2021 found them: 24 yards and 40.

He was swinging one-handed in a pressurised suit that would not let him turn his shoulders, with a club head taped to a sample scoop. The point is not that he exaggerated but that the footage was good enough, fifty years later, to settle it — the balls were located by stacking frames of 16mm film against high-resolution orbital images.
