Fact #132
Missions
Apollo 12 landed 160 metres from Surveyor 3, which had been sitting there for two and a half years, and the crew walked over and cut pieces off it to bring home.
It is the only time anyone has retrieved hardware from another world. A famous claim followed — that living Streptococcus bacteria were found inside the camera, having survived on the Moon — and it has not held up: the handling on Earth was sloppy enough that contamination after return is the likeliest explanation, as NASA's own re-examination concluded in 2011.
