Before 1966 nobody knew whether a spacecraft would sink into the lunar dust. Luna 9 landed and didn't, which is how we found out.

Some respected scientists had argued the surface might be covered in metres of loose powder. The Soviet Luna 9 settled onto firm regolith and transmitted the first pictures from the surface. Surveyor 1 confirmed it months later, and human landings became a question of engineering rather than geology.
