The first soft landing on the far side happened in 2019, sixty years after the first photograph of it.

China's Chang'e 4 set down in Von Kármán crater inside the South Pole–Aitken basin. Because the far side never faces Earth, the mission needed a relay satellite parked beyond the Moon just to talk home. Chang'e 6 later returned the first samples from that hemisphere.
