The far side holds one of the largest impact craters in the solar system: the South Pole–Aitken basin, about 2,500 km across and 8 km deep.

Whatever hit there punched through most of the crust, which makes the basin floor the best place to sample the Moon's mantle without drilling. That's a large part of why recent missions have targeted the lunar south pole region.
