The first television demonstration
John Logie Baird showed a moving image to the Royal Institution in a Soho attic, using a ventriloquist's dummy as his subject.
The apparatus was built from a hatbox, biscuit tin lids, darning needles and bicycle lamp lenses. The dummy sat in for a person because the lighting needed was hot enough to be unpleasant.
