The largest solar storm on record lit aurorae bright enough to read a newspaper by, as far south as Cuba.

Telegraph systems threw sparks, some operators were shocked, and a few lines kept working after being disconnected from their batteries, running on the current the sky was inducing. A thin crescent meant nothing competed with the light show.
