Neptune was located by mathematics first. An astronomer pointed a telescope where the arithmetic said to look and found it within an hour.

Irregularities in Uranus's orbit implied something further out was tugging on it. Le Verrier posted the predicted position to Berlin; Galle found the planet the same night, less than a degree from where the letter said it would be.
