Noon went black across New England, candles were lit at midday, and that night the near-full moon rose the colour of blood.

Smoke from enormous forest fires to the north, thick enough to blot out the Sun and redden everything behind it. The Connecticut legislature debated adjourning; one member famously refused, on the grounds that if it were the Day of Judgement he would rather be found doing his job.
