Kon-Tiki sets out
Six men pushed a balsa-wood raft into the Pacific to prove it could have been done, and drifted 4,300 miles.
They made it in 101 days. Heyerdahl's actual thesis, that Polynesia was settled from South America, turned out to be wrong, but the voyage remains a spectacular way to have been wrong.
