A country hears its emperor's voice
At noon on 15 August 1945 Japan heard a recording of Hirohito announcing the surrender, in court language most listeners could barely follow.
Almost nobody in the country had ever heard the emperor speak. Officers had tried to seize the recording the night before and failed; the phrase everyone remembers, that the war had developed "not necessarily to Japan's advantage", is a fair translation of a deliberately indirect sentence.
