The Lisbon earthquake

An earthquake, then a tsunami, then a firestorm destroyed Lisbon on All Saints' Day, while the churches were full.

The disaster prompted the first systematic survey of an earthquake's effects, a questionnaire sent to every parish, which is why seismology dates its beginnings here. It also badly damaged the philosophical position that this was the best of all possible worlds, as Voltaire pointed out at length.
