The first circumnavigation comes home a day late

Eighteen survivors reached Spain having sailed round the world, and found their meticulous ship's log was a full day behind everyone on shore.

Sailing west, they had chased the Sun and lost a sunrise without noticing. It was the first practical demonstration that going round the Earth costs you a day, three centuries before anyone drew a date line.
