Five hundred seeds go to the Moon

Apollo 14's command module pilot took about 500 tree seeds with him into lunar orbit, in a personal kit, as a favour to the US Forest Service.

Stuart Roosa had been a smokejumper before he was an astronaut. The canister burst during decontamination and the seeds were mixed up and assumed ruined; most of them germinated anyway, and the resulting Moon Trees were planted across America for the bicentennial, mostly without records of where.
