The first Nobel Prizes

The first Nobels were handed out at new moon, five years to the day after Alfred Nobel died.

Nobel wrote the will establishing them in a Paris club with no lawyer present, and his family contested it for years. He had been moved to act partly by a French newspaper that ran his obituary by mistake and called him a merchant of death.
